Beginner's Mind: Zen and the Art of Shaolin Martial Arts

The renowned Zen Master Suzuki Roshi said, "In the beginner's mind, there are many possibilities, but in the expert's mind, there are few." This attitude gives us an open mind and keeps our training fresh. I have decades of experience, but I’m still a beginner. I’m still learning. This gives me limitless potential.

As long as we have an internet connection, we are no longer geographically limited and can access more classes and information than ever before. But our minds are often limited. We think too much and put constraints on what we think we can or can’t do.

I entered the Shaolin Temple at the age of fourteen. I received a gift that I didn’t realise was precious until I came into the world. It wasn’t the gift of Qigong, Kung Fu, or Iron Body. It was the gift of now. When I train and teach, my heart is 100% here.

Through my classes, I aim to fully immerse you in the present moment. By doing so, you not only learn and train but also receive the gift of beginner's mind. This gift already exists within you, but you may find it difficult to tap into.

I am humbled by my students, who keep coming back to my classes. In my Live Zoom sessions, where we have a Q&A on Fridays, I’m happy to see familiar faces. I think you come back because you recognise that this is real. Not just the teachings but the feeling.

In this space, we are nowhere else but here. And it’s my hope that the space expands and gives you the tools to take what you’ve learnt and apply it to every part of your life.
